Only one of each research building can ever be built. Research Complexes act as the electric tier of laboratories, and as a result, cannot be built at the same time as a laboratory. However, a Laboratory V can upgrade into a Research Complex I. If multiple research buildings are found in an empire, their buffs do not stack, but their upkeep does.
Research Speed[]
The research buildings only provide buffs to a player's research speed, which is only one component of research. Tech point generation is another part of research that players often forget about.
Strategy[]
Players should build their research progression buildings before moving onto the laboratory, since the School and University buildings provide research speed at more efficient upkeep costs than laboratories. Many players are unaware of how quickly laboratory costs can sneak up on their budget. In the late game, only once when a player has access to cheap power should they consider building the expensive Research Complex.
